‘Muslim Life Planning Institute’ invited to Mental Health Conference for 5th Consecutive Year

Washington, DC., Feb. 16, 2021 — Muslim Life Planning Institute (MLPI), a national community-building organization, has accepted an invitation to the 13th Annual Muslim Mental Health Conference sponsored by Michigan State University Department of Psychiatry and the Institute for
Muslim Mental Health.

Restorative Healing and Liberation in ContextThe accepted abstract entitled ‘Examining Community Violence, Restoring Sanity; Reversing Cultural Incompetence’ seeks to explore underlying economic, psychosocial factors which contribute to social instability. MLPI’s Profound Conversations TM is an evolving thought process, which has shown efficacy in identifying root causes to the vexing challenges of our time through Quantum Listening TM. Guests include Imam Wahy ud-Deen Shareef, Dr. Debbie Almontaser, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Dr. Ted Sutton, and Musawara Ali Shabazz.

“Healing from pain and traumas that result from oppressive sociopolitical structures such as racism,
Islamophobia, and sexism must be approached from a multifaceted perspective. The individual must
understand themselves in context, and heal on a personal level, while society must change to stop oppression from occurring. Thus, healing cannot be done alone and does not happen in a vacuum. For true healing to occur, a transformation needs to happen on the individual and societal level. These transformations take place when we as a community can work to raise awareness of issues of inequality and intersectionality, affirm salient cultural identities, resist against oppressive systems, and promote social change that will alleviate suffering.” – Farha Abbasi, MD MSU Department of Psychiatry.

Who Should Attend?
Physicians, social work professionals, mental health professionals and other providers of services to Muslim communities in southeast Michigan and beyond. All are encouraged to join the conversation exploring themes of Restorative Healing and Liberation in Context. For more information about the conference email msummhconference@gmail.com
